European Roller Protection

The European roller is a middle sized migratory bird, the size of a Eurasian jay at 29–32 cm in length with a 52–58 cm wingspan. It is mainly blue with an orange-brown back.
The European roller is striking in its strong direct flight, with the brilliant blue contrasting with black flight feathers. Rollers prefer mosaical habitats, with a few trees, shrubs and the most important factor is grazing animals which provide insect food-base, and also a nesting hole in which it can nest successfully. In Vojvodina, the most important factor proved to be the lack of good nest hole which were made the Green woodpecker in solitary trees, tree-lines of farms.
By providing artificial nestboxes for the Rollers, we give them a safe nesting place and also mark them with ornithological rings with unique codes to track their migration. They arrive in Serbia in late April, early May and if the weather is warm, they will start the breeding process with striking aerial display, hence the English name of the bird: Roller. After the display, the male bring food-gifts for the female in form of insects. The chicks hatch after approximately 28 days of incubating and stay in the nestbox for one more month.

Implementing active measures to protect biodiversity
One of the main activities of the Association is the ongoing protection of the European Roller
The program began in 2003, and by 2024, more than 5000 nest boxes were installed. In 2024 we checked 759. Out of these, 509 were used by rollers, resulting in the ringing of 1,312 chicks. Over the years, the Association has installed more than 5,000 nest boxes and the breeding numbers are still going up, so we still can achieve higher numbers. Unfortunately, some nest boxes have fallen apart, others were stolen, and some are now used by other bird species.
This initiative has significantly contributed to preserving and increasing the population of the European Roller, a strictly protected bird species. In addition, to raise awareness about the importance of protecting this and other species, and biodiversity as a whole we have organized workshops, lectures, and conferences for protected area managers, decision-makers, and the general public.

Why is this important?
The extinction of rollers in Serbia is not just a loss for nature—it carries ecological, cultural, and social consequences.

-
Indicator of environmental problems
Rollers are highly sensitive to changes in their surroundings. Their disappearance signals broader environmental issues, such as the degradation of natural landscapes, which impacts many other species.
-
Part of natural heritage
This beautiful bird species is more than just visually appealing; it is a vital part of Serbia’s natural heritage. Losing it would deprive future generations of the opportunity to experience the richness of local wildlife.
-
Influence on other species
Habitat loss, driven by increasing agricultural activity such as the plowing of grasslands, poses a significant threat to rollers. Protecting this strictly protected species helps safeguard many other species that share its habitat.
-
Boost to eco-tourism
Rollers are a magnet for bird enthusiasts and photographers. Their presence enhances the appeal of nature reserves, and their loss diminishes the potential for eco-tourism.

We have 17 areas
We oversee 17 territorial areas with the help of 15 dedicated coordinators. This reflects a strong local interest in our mission while ensuring highly effective fieldwork. By working locally, we reduce fuel costs and create opportunities for volunteer teamwork.
Each year, the coordinators come together for a conference to share experiences, enhance roller protection efforts, and strengthen team bonds.
